A still photograph of something that ought to be moving looks wrong in a very specific way, and this page is aimed at fixing exactly that. The effect is added rather than removed: the instruction asks for an aggressive directional blur along whichever movement the scene reads as having, with the surroundings turning into sweeping streaks of light and colour.

Two demands, and the outline is where they meet

The first half of the request streaks the background and every non-essential element around the subject. The second is a restriction: the primary subject, including all its limbs and body parts, must stay sharp, with no ghosting and no doubled image. Everything rests on the boundary between those two. Where an arm crosses a streaking wall, or trailing hair sits over a smeared background, the pass has to decide pixel by pixel where the subject ends. That seam is the first place to look at any result.

The direction comes from the picture unless you specify

The instruction visualises the most prominent direction of motion in the scene, which is why a side-on runner, a vehicle on a road, or a cyclist gives it an obvious axis and a front-on symmetrical portrait gives it nothing to work with. You can supply it in the prompt box, which asks for the subject, style, composition, and important details: name the axis ("a left-to-right pan", "a radial pull toward the camera"), the light sources worth dragging into lines, and the parts of the subject that must stay crisp.

What to inspect before exporting

• The subject outline, for a soft doubled edge or a limb that blurred along with the background.
• Thin extensions of the subject — hair, a trailing hand, spokes, antennae, a strap.
• Text and signage in the environment, which reads as fast when streaked but can come out garbled instead.
• Reflections and contact shadows on the subject, which a real long exposure would drag but this effect leaves where they are.
• Whether the streak direction agrees with the pose: a body leaning right against streaks running left reads as a mistake.

Can this make a stationary subject look fast?

That is the intended use — the streaks are generated around a sharp subject rather than captured in a long exposure. Because nothing was actually moving, check the details a real pan would have changed too, particularly contact shadows and reflections.

Part of my subject came out blurred. Why?

Limbs that overlap a heavily streaked background are the weak point, and the instruction explicitly asks for no ghosting there, which is not always achievable. Name the body parts to keep sharp in the prompt and check them at full size.

Does it suit a portrait facing the camera?

A head-on figure offers no direction of travel, so the pass has to invent one. Describe the movement you want — sideways, toward the viewer, a spin — and expect a more stylised result than a side-on action shot gives.

Will the effect soften my product edges?

The request keeps the primary subject in focus while the environment moves, so packaging and hard-edged objects are usually the clean case. Look at glossy or transparent products specifically, since their highlights belong to the subject but read like light streaks.
