Check the palette and the stair-steps before exporting

Look at curved and diagonal edges first: a shoulder, a bicycle wheel, a slanted roof. Hard-edged pixels turn those into stair-steps, which is correct for the style but can read as damage on a portrait. Then check the transitions — gradients should arrive as dithered bands rather than soft blends, and if a sky or a face still looks smoothly graded, the style name you gave was probably too generic. Finally count the colours in your head: a 16-bit or NES ask should give you a limited, deliberate palette, not the full range of the original photo.
